The most preventable cause of hearing loss is exposure to harmful noise levels. Noise levels become harmful at 85 decibels or more, about the volume of a lawn mower. There are several ways that you can protect your hearing from harmful noise levels.
The best way to protect hearing is to avoid loud settings or turn the volume down when possible. If avoiding harmful noise levels is not possible, such as at work or in entertainment settings, it’s recommended you use hearing protection such as earplugs or earmuffs.
Both work by reducing the level of sound entering the ear. Earmuffs fit over the ear and are held in place by a headband. Earplugs fit snugly in the ear and typically come in either silicone, foam or flanged styles.
You should choose the ear protection style that is most comfortable for you and can be worn for long periods of time during your work day or activity. If you or someone you care for is interested in hearing protection, please contact The Hearing Place at (605) 217-4327 to schedule an appointment.
