We measure hearing loss severity in degrees of decibel loss. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association offers the following degree categories:
- Normal: -10 to 15 dB
- Slight: 16 to 25 dB
- Mild: 26 to 40 dB
- Moderate: 41 to 55 dB
- Moderately severe: 56 to 70 dB
- Severe: 71 to 90 dB
- Profound: 91+ dB
People with profound hearing loss typically do not hear any speech and only very loud sounds, like construction equipment or concerts at the Olson Cultural Events Center.
Not all types of hearing aids will help patients with advanced hearing loss, but there are a few available options.
Behind-the-Ear Hearing Aids
Not all hearing aids are built the same. Some are sleek and nearly invisible, designed for mild to moderate hearing loss. But for someone dealing with profound loss, larger, behind-the-ear (BTE) options are the best course of action for a few reasons:
- BTE devices offer more powerful amplification to meet the extra decibel loss
- BTE earmolds help create a tight seal, preventing feedback and ensuring sound gets where it needs to go
- Many BTE models have advanced features like directional microphones, noise reduction and wireless streaming
Other hearing aid styles, like in-the-ear or completely-in-the-canal models, might look more discreet, but they don’t offer the same level of support for profound loss.
Do Behind-the-Ear Hearing Aids Restore Normal Hearing?
BTE hearing aids are great options for improving safety and communication, but they can’t restore normal hearing. When you get your new devices, your hearing aid specialist will review what you can expect regarding volume and speech clarity to help you set realistic expectations.
Are Behind-the-Ear Hearing Aids Bulky?
While BTE devices are on the larger end of styles, technology advancements have slimmed them down considerably from older options. Newer models fit sleekly and comfortably behind your ears.
